I've about had enough...

I am looking for suggestions as to what I should do with my truck. I Have a 2001 Sierra 2500HD with a 6.0 and 69k total miles on the truck. I for the most part quite like the truck itself, and still owe a couple years on it.

The problem is a couple years ago it started doing the "like a knock" thing in the mornings and kept getting louder and louder. I complained to GMC and they extended my warranty.

Last February it started knocking all the time and finally GM put a new engine in it and things seemed to be on the right track.

Well, after about five thousand miles on the new engine it now has a tick that doesn't go away. I have had it to the dealer a couple times and all they say is "its not an exhaust leak" and "we don't know what it is but it sounds like a mechanical noise through the drivers side exhaust manifold".

I have to agree it sounds like a lifter or something similar but no-one seems to want to find or fix the problem.

I'm sure if I go to trade it in I will lose money because of it, and I need a dependable truck for towing. I have about determined that there isn't another gm in my future...

Any ideas?

The replacement engine isn't covered by any warranty?

It is, but two dealers have told me that if they tear it down and the problem isn't evident and they end up putting it back together I will end up paying about $600 for labor and gaskets.

They are telling me I need to wait for it to fail before they can fix it. It makes no sense to me and everytime I head to the cabin I am going to be wondering if this is the trip it will fail... Last thing I want is to be stranded on the side of the road in Southern Idaho in the middle of no where.

As far as running it seems to be fine right now, just a constant tick from the drivers side (rear) of the engine. I haven't noticed any performance loss, smoke, oil consumption or anything out of the norm. It is loudest from under the drivers side door behind the tire.

I've had the same noise coming from the driver side of my 2002. I took it to the dealer and they said it was normal on most GM trucks. I haven't had any other problems because of it.
