Its time for me to get a new ride. I love the intrigue but i get bored of every car ive ever owned and this is no different,

I want to sell it private party as the dealer trade-in is terrible, how much should i ask

3800 series II
115000 Miles
Upgraded Alpine HU with pioneer speakers.
Possibly will leave the two 12" kenwoods and amp

Exterior is clean apart from faded bumpers and a 1ft diameter primer spot. Interior is well kept except form rear passenger carpet is stained with paint.

How much do you think i could sell this car for, KBB says $3800 private party. But i would like some more

I would say that 1ft primer spot drops the value of your car by $1k and would be worth painting along with your bumper. Steam that stain out and use a wet and dry vacuum to extract. I would try to get $5k and maybe even $6k. Ask for $6k then deal down.

Good advice. I recently asked my insurance company what my 1999 Intrigue (80k miles) was worth if it was totalled. They said about $8000, maybe a bit more.

The real selling point for the Intrigue is its GREAT gas mileage and GREAT performance. Hard to find that combo in one package.

Im going to get the paint for my car, its hard to find anyone that sells spray cans with my WA#.

I took it to carmax for fun to see what i would get, they offered $1700. i laughed and left. a mazda dealer said theyd give 3000,

But im having second thoughts, i like this car, its responsive comfortable and a bunch of other things too. so i may reconsider.

I would even try to get $7k for it if you really wax it up nice. Do not cut (buff hard) into the clear coat otherwise UV light will quickly ruin the paint. The clear coat will come off like a gelatin (soft spongy plastic/wax)

For 1.7K-3k$ I would buy it -that's cheap. Junkmax would probably try to sell it for $7k and maybe deal down (doubtful). I think you should keep it since you have suffered from most of the depreciation allready. Why not keep it for another 20 years then you will come ahead. Buying a new car every 2-3 years if probably the worst idea.

With forums and alldatadiy.com it's getting much easier to fix and diagnose cars.

Would I sell my 2000 Intrigue with 88k miles on it for 3k? No, not even if it needed a new transmission. If the tranmission and engine were getting bad I might try to get rid of it. Actually I would probably just give it to my dad for parts since he has a 99 Intrigue with 130K miles.

I got my new tires today for my 1999 Intrigue. Out the door, they cost $500.
Suppose to be good for 80k miles.

I like to judge the remaining life of a car by the condition of the front driver seat. Mine is just broken in. The original shocks are very strong. The engine uses oil but has from the git-go. The transmission, since I've added the Lubegard, is very cheerful. I expect problems down the road but fixing them will be a lot cheaper than buying a new car.

The styling of the Intrigue is first-rate compare to some of the newer cars.

long-term wise the 3.8 will be a better bet since the 3.5L can't be rebuilt. I don't care, I love the 3.5L and the power it makes above 3K rpm. Torquey in the lower RPM's also. Great car for cruising the back roads at 45-50mph around 1500 (or less) rpm.

When I bought new tires the transmission acted real weird like it didn't know what to do. It took a few weeks for the transmission to get the shift points down.

Now it drives awesome and is just under 2000 rpm at 70mph. I can also go 80mph+ (note: this is damn near redline) in second gear.

For me the new tires were a great improvement. The car is also much quieter. BFG Control 65k-80K mile ones (about $90 a piece) Great traction in the wet and snow also.

I'm thinking the 3.5 is rebuildable - just much more difficult to do. Mainly for the fact that the motor is so hi-tech, with so many more moving parts, and the fact that it might be time consuming repairing threaded holes in the block with time-serts, or other thread-repairing devices. (The Helm manual has over 400 pages of engine - mechanical, and another 600 pages of engine - cooling and controls).

Has anyone here ever done a major overhaul on the 3.5? Do all the threaded holes need repairing during an overhaul, or just the headbolt holes?
