Hard Starting, stalling & fuel smell
105,000 miles. Very infrequently the car is hard to start. Will turnover over however will run very rough for a few seconds. Garage gets filled with fuel smelling smoke. Progresivly getting worse. Today took three attempts. Car stalled on first. Is starting to burn a quart of oil every 2,500 miles. Any suggestions?

Re: Hard Starting, stalling & fuel smell
burning 1qt/2000miles is average for the 1.9 engine, you are in good shape there.
the ECT is the engine coolant temp sensor, it tells the computer to run rich when the engine is cold, if it fails(common on the 1.9) the engine will run rich. one possible test is to disconnect it before starting the engine, then the computer should default to the reading from the intake air temp sensor, and start better if it is bad. also can you determine if the smell/ smoke is coming from the tailpipe or from underhood?
