Dumb high beam headlight question

When the high beams are turned on are they supposed to illuminate in addition to the low beams so all four lights are on, or do they work seperatly? When I hit the highs, my low beams turn off, but that doesn't seem right to me. Thanks!

theres nuthing wrong with ur lights mine do the same im thinking that the outer brights are just brighter than the regular ones or the angle is different so it puts off more light

Thanks! I'm just learning about this car. It was pretty much a wreck when I got it, but I'm slowly working on it and trying to figure out how things are suppose to be!
