problem with speedo

Hi all, Have recently bought a 1992 8v golf gti and am having a problem with the speedo in the fact that it doesn't appear to work, when the ignition is turned on the mileage and clock disappear on the lcd display and there is no response on the speedo or rev counter when driving, have also noticed that the lights that illuminate them don't come on when I put my lights on, was wondering if anyone had any ideas?

maybe buying a whole gauge cluster, have a mechanic check it to see whats wrong.
