Turn downs? 3rd try the charm?

So I've got a v6. It has a Y - pipe. I got that cut behind the cats and ran two pipes back into Flowmaster Original 40's. Well Originaly I had two pipes running back over the axle and at an angle. That didn't make any noise. Then I got turndowns. Yes it's loud inside but not that loud outside. So If I cut the pipes off at the muffler and run 3 inch pipes back about 3 or 4 inches long .. will it be louder outside of the car?
