Can't believe fixing brakes could be so costly!

Hi all!
This is my first post...and I am in disbelief at how much it is going to cost me to get my Front Brakes fixed. I was expecting about $150-200 for a repair job...but my mechanic just called and told me the total cost is $523.97 - That is amazing! Geez, add another $1000 and that's how much my car is worth! I don't know if I am being "takin for a ride" so to speak, but I am not a brainiac when it comes to repairing cars. Here's the crazy thing... The mechanic also decided to replace the rear brake pads... at my expense! I went to this mechanic cause of their good reputation and referrals. Oh well... there goes my car & insurance payments for the month!

Its mostly the labor that kills. Did you have new rotors put on or something because a brake pad change wouldn't have cost that much.
