at what speed does a stock spoiler take effect?

(if ever)

i think tegs look way cooler w/out a spoiler, but was wondering if it would affect performance in any way.

Kind of an older picture of my car, but notice that there's no spoiler. I think it looks a lot better like this!! As far as downforce and that type of thing, i really don't think you need to worry about that. The little tiny stock spoiler probably doesn't do jack.

Re: at what speed does a stock spoiler take effect?

if i remember correctly i think it actually helps at speeds of 130+mph, which is kind of pointless because our cars top out at around 137mph or so

stock spoilers are purely cosmetic unless you are driving a really expensive car so dont worry about what speed it helps your car out with downforce

Re: at what speed does a stock spoiler take effect?

I am a mechanical engineer and i studied aerodynamics. There can only be downforce on a wing if it's titlted at angle, which most spoilers are not. Air hits spoilers horiziontaly on roadcars , and opposing the motion of the vehicle,so there is 0 downforce, meaning that if anything, it actually slows down the vehicle because the thickness of the spoiler creates a drag force.

Re: at what speed does a stock spoiler take effect?

i guess thats a reasonable explanation but if it does cause a drag force, its very very minimal and wouldnt be noticable at all

please correct me if i'm wrong, but can't spoilers work like an upsidedown wing creating lift, but in the downwards direction instead of up.

If the wing is tilted towards the front of the vehicle, there is a downforce, if its tilted towards th back there is lift. Spoilers on road cars are flat meaning no lift or drag, the thickness of the wing creates a drag force but it's minimal and doesn't make a diffrence. The whole point is that spoilers on road cars are for looks, and not to increase the aerodynamic efficiency of the car.

Re: at what speed does a stock spoiler take effect?

Im sorry but i would have to disagree about that. But the spoiler on the eclipse is quite different than integra ones. I had an rs with with no spoiler and the back end of the car would move around alot. After i installed the the gst spoiler the car didn't move around at all and would take turns much better. My spoiler doesn't point toward the ground at all but the top of the spoiler has a shorter distance for air to travel than the bottom. Therefore creating downforce just the oppsite of an airplane wing.
