Question 91 Accord Ignition Trouble

My 91 Accord does this thing every now and then where it doesn't want to start. I crank the engine and check for spark and there is none, but if I let the car sit for 30 minutes or so it will start right up. The car has new plugs and wires, and a new distributor cap and rotor. I thing its my coil that is going bad, but I thought when a coil goes bad it does not work at all. Anyone have any suggestions. Thanks

Re: 91 Accord Ignition Trouble

When coils go bad, they can do many things like work sometimes and sometimes not. Intermittent problems can be a bitch to fix. I would start with the cheap fix first- the main relay. The relays do not go bad but sometimes there are cold solder joints which could cause intermittent problems. Remove the relay and resolder all the joints which hold the relays onto the PC board. If that doesn't fix the problem, then go to the next step. Ignition Coil test, igniter test, ECU test. Check the ignition switch by checking for voltage at the top of the coil. But you are have to do the tests when the thing is not working. Keep us advised of what you find.

Re: 91 Accord Ignition Trouble

The main relay is under the dash on the left kick panel to the left of the coin drawer. To get to it you need to remove the large module visible from under the dash. The main relay is just above it. Most times the problem is caused by bad solder joints on the relays holding them to the PC board. Just resolder all the solder points and reinstall.
