Peak oil?

How does everyone feel about Peak oil. Recent hurricanes have spiked prices but oil has been rising in price consistently for ages before that.

When asking how it will automotives i believe it will be pretty easy to get around. We can get some excellent cars running on Bio-Diesel, electricity, and LPG.

The you ask how will it affect society in general? Will there be a breakdown?

Re: Peak oil?

I hope so, people need to stop taking energy for granted. We have always been able to travel and turn on the lights whenever we want. We could use so much less energy.

We can actually make our own oil or oil type products from corn and stuff. The problem is it has always been cheaper to use just natural oil and easier to produce. Also, oil companies want the almight dollar. If they put in a cheaper fuel source they'll lose their money.

If we do run out and get sent to the dark ages I promise you it'll be because of corporate politics.

Re: Peak oil?

We'll never run out of energy, it'll just never be as cheap as we remember it. When we have grandkids, we'll get to tell them of when gasoline was UNDER a dollar a gallon.

Oh yeah..btw. I'll need to find some links, but there is a growing number of scientists and geologists who are starting to believe that crude oil is formed from an inorganic proccess... i.e not actaully dino juice. Makes sense of you think aobut the dead dinosaur theory;

a LOT of dinosaurs
all died at once
in the same spots
and got covered in LOTS of dirt
before they rotted away.

When you think about it the dinosaur theory sounds a little silly. I mean do you know how much oil be burn a day? It's around 8 million barrels and this was back in the 1970's so it has probably gone up a whole lot since then.

I did a little math though and if it stayed at 8 million barrels a day from 1975 to 2000 here are the figures. I'm sorry if my math is a little off.

73,000,000,000 barrels of oil burned between 1975 and 2000.

4,015,000,000,000 gallons of oil burned between 1975 and 2000.

I don't know about you, but that's a whole lot of fucking dinosaurs to make that much oil.

Re: Peak oil?

oil is comprised more of plants than dinosaurs but can be any form of life. thats the thing though the earth is so old and so many plants and animals have died that its enough for the tiny amount of time we have been using gasoline. but no it will not last forever we need to put some real effort into alternative fuel sources. personally i think every house should be fitted with solar panels. right now the sun is the only reliable long last resource we have.

I've actually thought of the idea of when I build a house, fitting solar panels all over the roof and putting several storage batteries in the attic. Free power right there.
The thing is this is a good idea but solar panels are freakin expensive. I know where I worked this summer they had some that powered some light houses and they were several hundred dollars.

Yeah, it would require a lot of capital to build, but in the long run it would save you money on your energy bills.

that's maybe IF every single plant and animal that died didnt rot. Think of how much energy is contained in a gallon of gasoline. then mulitply taht by how much gasoline is used per day, for almost 100 years now.

I'm starting to lean towards the inorganic geoligical proccesses theory.

Re: Peak oil?

yea solor panels pay for themselves pretty quickly. i hear the gov. pays you if you have them. combine that with saved energy bills and u have broke even in no time. plus any extra u can sell to the power company for even more mula. if the gov. would invest in them in many houses they would save billions in energy costs and have a cleaner enviroment. the whole country could run off solar, nuclear, hydro, and other clean sources.
