Aftermath of Hurricane Rita

Did Hurricane Rita live up to expectations? I believe this time around, it was a total over-reaction and the storm was a bust, of course, which is good.

I'm going to say no.
They say it wasn't as bad on the coast as they said it would be. The thing is New Orleans got flooded again but it was already in bad shape.

Fascinating choice of topic.

Ever experienced a hurricane first hand?

Yes, I lived in Miami, Dade County, Florida. I've been through my fair share.

Did it live up to it's hype? No. But mother nature is unpredictable and you just never know what she's going to do.

Did people over-react? Unfortunatly yes. People paniced and evacuated when the only ones that should have were the gulfcoast region and elderly. This caused the chaos on the roads, which lead to the largest traffic jam in history. Maybe next time people will remain calm and realize they need to address the situation, prepare their property, and then think if their family is in any extreme danger.

There was a lady that called one of the local weathermen and was trying to tell him that they needed to be more accurate with their predictions because they caused so much panic. I wanted to the weatherman to just tell the lady to shut up and think before she speaks. Watching hours upon hours of the news, so many people with so many stupid, redundant questions.

Edit: Just found out my aunt and uncles house on the gulf, right on the texas/lousiana border was destroyed.

What the hell is her problem? She should know by now that weathermen only tell you what you already know, their predictions run on a 50-50 chance because weather is unpredictable no matter how hard you try, just how it is.

I hate this.. the way people act though, like if you tell people to get out of the way and then nothing happens, they bitch.. but if you DONT tell them to get out of the way and it happens people still bitch because no one told them anything, but its not like they would've done anything even if they got told..

also sorry about your family that lost their house.. thats real bad especially because the stormed turned more towards Louisiana..

Yea, and they are always careful to say, it can go from here to here and there is this window of error. They pointed it out 23.5 hours during each day and people still don't get it. They are called predictions for a reason.

I'm just glad that our mayors, Houston, Galveston and others took control of the situation and showed how you are suppose to warn your citizens properly. They have no control of the idiots that decided to leave because they were scared.

There was a great article in the Houston Chronicle, by a fairly liberal editor and he made a good point about only needing to hear from the people in charge and no one else. He made a point of calling out both Sheila Jackson Lee and Tom Delay for getting, as he called it, "camera time". There was no need for them to speak or be seen, but yet they couldn't help themselves.

Thanks. The funny thing is we're all still joking about it sort of. They had planned to remodel it and, well, now they get to remodel from the ground up. I'm really curious as to what it looks like exactly.

Is everything in your area returning to normal? How did West Houston fair and the rest? I used to live way out on Westheimer.

BTW - Delay and Jackson are clowns.

Oh yea, everything on this side of town is fine. I'm out in Jersey Village, I'm sure you've heard of it. Still had my scheduled interview today, and all of my friends are back at work. The only ones that aren't are the teachers.

Jackson and DeLay are clowns...haha. And you've gotta love DeLay's dyed jet-black hair. He could be a spokesman for Men's Choice Hair Color.

Edit: My dad just forwarded me and email from my uncle about their house. One of the company guys did a fly over of the company, which is gone and their house. The only thing left is the stilts it stood on and one palm tree. They were told the area was confronted with 120mph winds for 8 hours and a 25ft. storm surge.
