Question 02 Silverado 1/2 ton rear pass. axle seal

just wondering if i'm getting screwed or not... i have a slightly leaky rear pass axle seal on a run of the mill silverado ext cab 1/2 ton 5.3L and the guy at the brake shop told me that theres 3 types of rear ends that GM puts in the silvy: an open, semi open, or closed. said it had something to do with the way bolts/pins/etc were accessed inside the rear end. is this crap or not? he said if it's a closed one, only the dealer can replace the seal b/c the whole gear set has to be pulled out and it is a lot more expensive than a normal seal repacement. and theres no way to tell which of the 3 types until you pop off the diff cover. any comments? is this a load of crap?

Check your RPO codes in your glove box. If you see "G80" then you have a closed differential. I'd take it to a shop that can pull up your truck's info with your VIN, tho. Let them figure it out, but know what you've got before you take it to them so as not to get screwed

thx for the info. no G80 code. is this to assume that the axle shafts can be taken out with relative ease? of course, the dealer would be the best source of info, but it sounds like i don't have the closed diff.

Re: 02 Silverado 1/2 ton rear pass. axle seal

Call around and ask prices. Ask those you trust for a reputible shop. Open rear ends are easy to get the axle out of. Consider getting a Haynes manuel as you will need the book if you want to do more mods. When you have the book take a look and figure out if you want to try it yourself. Or get the neighborhood mechanic for a suitcase of beer to do it for you and you buy the parts.

Re: 02 Silverado 1/2 ton rear pass. axle seal

Thanks for this great post... I got the same type of minor leak on the driver side rear... I think I may have to invest in a manual if I'm gonna keep this truck... I noticed the leaking rear axle seal when I was checking and lubing my brakes, now at every tire rotation... Thanks again for the post and reply
