Is there a way to permanently turn off the check engine light?

I have a '02 Dodge 2500 / 360 and 6 months ago the check enging light came on and after 2 trips to the dealer they determined that it was the catylitic (sp?) converter. They replaced it under warranty and it was fine until about 3 weeks ago. Now the check engine light intermittently comes on and the only thing the dealer came up with was 2 cylinders were low on compression, and after picking it up at the dealer I had a miss. I checked the compression myself and found that one cylinder was low; 135lbs vs 145lbs. I also found that in the process of the dealer doing their troubleshooting the tech had crossed 2 plug wires. I corrected that and, obviously, the miss went away. I reset the engine light and it was fine for about 2 days, then it came back on. It reset itself, but then came back on later the same day. My question is: can I do away with the "idiot" light altogether?

I am no expert, and this does not exactly answer your question. But, I have a 97 1500, and had check engine light problems. My cat converter was changed under warranty, and they also changed my purge solenoid. Right after they changed the solenoid (under warranty), the light came back on again. Turns out the stars at the dealership did not connect the sensor plug all the way on the solenoid. Lesson learned, could be something as simply as a loose plug.

Good luck!

I'd keep taking it back to them and then check into your rights under the "Lemon Law".

I once changed out an engine that crossed model years from "old school" and "computerized" and just pulled the check engine light bulb out of the socket.

Do not disable your check engine light. If you do it will most likely void your warranty. They'll consider that tampering with the pcm and it will be voided along with anything problems directly or indirectly relating to it.
