Liftgate Open?
I just bought a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Edition today. On the little computer thing at the bottom of the dash it says the liftgate is open. I've opened and closed the liftgate and it still says that it's open. Anyone have a solution?

Re: Liftgate Open?
Often the computer "door open" lights are triggered by a switch or sensor on the door. I'm not certain how this works on the '97, but I recommend looking for a switch that is triggered when the door is closing. If it's mechanical, try some lubricant and make sure it's not sticking. If it's an electronic contact (like a brass plate that something on the door makes contact with), clean it with alcohol or steel wool (a pencil eraser works well, too).
Let us know if this helps. |

Re: Liftgate Open?
I can't see anything like a switch, or brass plate...or anything like that. I can't see anything that would have to do with letting the VIC know the liftgate is shut.

Re: Liftgate Open?
The switch might be inside the latch itself. If you can open up the tailgate (take off the interior plastic cover) you might see where the wires go, and if there's a switch that's stuck. If it sends a signal to the dashboard when it's open, an electric tester might indicate if there's a signal being sent even when the door is closed (this is assuming you can see the switch and/or wires from inside the Jeep when the tailgate is closed). I haven't worked on this myself - I'm just suggesting where I would start. Let us know if this helps.

Re: Liftgate Open?
I fixed it. What I did was take off the plastic cover on the inside of the liftgate. I unplugged the sensor that was for the glass section of the liftgate. Now the VIC doesn't say it's open. So thanks for all the help.
