It would be very helpful to know the engine size! Although most are easily accessable some engines are more difficult to see and get to than others!

Re: 2000 regal starter?

3800-i can not get anything out of the car when i turn the key over.i check the battery and generator and they are ok. the only thing i can think of now is the stater unless you can tell me something else to check. what happened is i was driving and everthing went blank for a secound. then when i turned the car off it would not start so i let it set for 1/2 hour and it started. the car did this for two days but now i can not get anything out of it. no click or nothing

Re: 2000 regal starter?

Jerry, this really doesn't sound like a starter issue. The starter on the 3800 is in the front of the engine toward the radiator. This sounds like a problem with a battery connection either to the starter or the main ground to the engine block. Total electrical failure like this indicates that there is a problem between the battery and the electrical components of the vehicle. I would check the power control center under the hood. Check all fuses and relays as well as the main connection to the control center. You will probably find that there is a bad connection or fuse. The other thing is to remove the battery terminals and clean them very well. If that does not work then look at the main ground that should be attached to the block.
You may also want to check the fusable links at the starter as one may have burnt.

If the car actually turns over but does not start then I would check the crank position sensor or the fuel pump relay. Both can cause stalling as you indicated. Good Luck!!

thank you-but i do not know what the control center is or where it is.also i do not know what the main ground is. BUT i just went out and pushed in real hard on the key and turned it and i got some lights on my control panel and the radio came on. does this mean anything? i should tell you i have a lot of keys on my key chain and i was wondering if the weight of the extra keys pulled the ignition switch loose.

Re: 2000 regal starter?

The power control box is a black box under the hood. It should be located on the fender. It should have a large knob in the center. Remove the cover and you should see a red wire attached at the very top. See if that is loose.

As you mentioned it is possible that the ignition switch has gone bad and intermittant contact can cause the problems you indicated. The lock part is just a cylinder but there are a couple of contacts that if they are bad will cause such a problem. The issue is that this is not a diy job due to the air bag.
