Shifter Knob on MT - how do you remove it - unscrew?

I'd like to change the leather shifter knob on my 92 manual transmittin, Looking in the maintenance manual it seems that it should just unscrew. I've tried -I also don't want to damage the leather - with no luck.

Does anyone have any suggestions or have they removed one in the past? Does it unscrew clockwise, counter-clockwise, are there any set screws?

Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Chris

wrap a towel around the shift knob then use a pipe wrench, unscrew ccw. i did mine recently but managed to damage the leather because of the wrong tool used
