Saab turbo problems
I bought a 1986 Saab 9000 Turbo, well when I bought it it didn't run so I got it running after I put a new coil pack and spark plugs in it and when I got it to start up it sat there and smoked worse than a set of tires on fire. It sat there and smoked out the entire lot we were in in like a half a minute. I drove it about 40 miles to my house and during this trip it uses 5 quarts of oil(this gives you an idea about the smoke)then I pull into my yard and a few hours later I went to go and look at it and I find out that the turbo's oil source for the bearings and shit is the engine oil. So I called a friend of mine that's a mechanic and he tells me that the turbo might be actually pumping oil into the engine . Is this actually possible?

Re: Saab turbo problems
Yes. If the car has some amount of miles on it, then maybe it's ready for the turbo to be rebuilt. When it's spewing oil into the engine it means the turbo oil seals are blows. Shouldn't be toooo expensive, but you'll notice loads of difference with a rebuilt/new turbo.
****EDIT: Meant to say it should NOT be too expensive. maybe a couple hundred bucks at most. If you take the turbo out and send it off. A shop may charge more for the labor. |

Re: Saab turbo problems
are you asking if the oil that goes through the engine is the same oil that lubricates the turbo, then yes that is how it works. If you are buring up oil that bad, it is either a seal in your turbo (probably the problem if alot miles are the issue), or your are burning up oil in the combustion chamber which means you have a bad piston ring(s). Do you see lots of oil around the bearing housing of the turbo?
