Turbo system

I am too poor to afford a nice $4000 supercharger system and definently too poor to buy a $5000 turbo system so im thinking of building one from junkyard parts.
Ive always wanted to make a JY turbo system and now that i have a car worth putting one on, i think im going to do it.

My question is mainly, what problems do you think il come accrost. the only main ones i can think of are when i connect the turbo to the exhaust manifold and i dont know of any good ways of keeping the turbo heat down inside the engine bay, other that a thick, steel heat shield.

A friend of mine took 2 stock turbos off of 2 Buick Grand Nationals and put them on his 91 5.0. YES I SAID 2 TURBOS. He's only running about 5 pounds of boost because he still has stock head gaskets and all that stuff. The buick turbo is small so it spools up quick but at top end he can feel them kind of running out of steam. If the bottom end was built for the turbos he would use more boost but he's scared to go any higher. He used the buick turbos because they were cheap. He couldn't use one buick turbo because they are so small that they would just rob power, but going twin worked out great (til he blows the stock head gaskets). He did everything himself, he said there were times that he wondered what the hell did he get himself into but it wasn't too bad. As for the underhood heat issue, he is using some kind of thick foil sheets on the underside of the hood just above the turbos. He said he's going to get either a cowl hood or a ram air hood to help get the hot air out and the cool air in. He hasn't had the car on a dyno yet but he's guessing around 400hp and 450tq.

Re: Turbo system

those are some pretty impressive numbers, i bet hes probably in the 11's.

How long did it take him to complete his turbo system. Ive heard of people doing them in a couple days (people who realy know what they're doing)and some people taking months to finish theirs.

A DYI turbo will never just take a couple of days. Heck just collecting all the parts are going to take you a while.

Re: Turbo system

I got my new turbo kit for $3000, complete. There are good deals out there, you just have to find them.

Re: Turbo system

Whats the basic hp out of a 302? Around 250? If that is the case, threoy is he should make around 90hp more, so around 340. 5psi is 1/3 14.7, so do the math.

Hey guys, I guess I have alot to address here huh. Well first I know he worked on it in his spare time in the winter. I'll tell him about this site and see if he can help you. I don't even know enough about turbos to know that I don't know, I think they're cool, but I just don't know. Sky, I know that the cowl hood pulls the heat out by the windshield but wouldn't the ram air be good to get the cool outside air in under the hood? Or maybe a combo of both like the Stormin-Normin hood. They have both a good size cowl and the two ram air scoops. Yeah I know, don't even waste time w/ the fake ram air hoods (no holes in the two scoops). As for how much power he has w/ the 2 buick turbos, he's only guessing about that going by the other parts he has. DON'T QUOTE ME ON THIS BUT I THINK THIS IS WHAT HE HAS................... Edelbrock intake, cam, exhuast w/off-road H-pipe, pulleys, 3.73's, and some of the other basics I might be forgetting. Ofcourse it's all topped off with 2 little K&N filters in front of the turbines. Like I said it has not been on a dyno yet so we're only guessing, it could be lower or higher, just a ballpark figure. GOD, I LOVE THIS SITE! OH, I THINK I'VE ALREADY SAID THAT ONCE OR TWICE, OHWELL, C-YA GUYS. I think my wife hates it though, ow well too bad for her!!

Re: Turbo system

If you do a search in the mustang forum for hood scoops, it has been talked about at length. Air does not flow the way you think it does, a scoop will normally have a high pressure in front of it, unless its about 6" off the hood.

Yeah, I know Sky, but the ram air just looks mean!! I forgot that to get ENOUGH air in the hood the scoop has to stick up farther than the hood. In that case, I guess I'd get the Stormin/Normin because it's the best of both worlds.
