88 Cavalier not going into reverse?

My girlfriend has a 88 Cavalier 2.0 thats has been giving her trouble. Now all of a sudden th car will not go into reverse at all. The backup light come on but the car basically goes into neutral. IT just revs up. I checked the normal things like detent, hoses, fluids, etc.. But nothing seems to add up. help please?

Re: 88 Cavalier not going into reverse?

manual or automatic? my guess is its a transmission problem... at least it was when my old '90 hyundai excel wouldn't go into reverse.... then it started leaking transmission fluid.. and bled to death.
