Had same problem initially with my daughter's '96 after replacing several valves following a broken timing belt at highway speed. The cam sprocket and crankshaft timing marks will align every two crankshaft revolutions so you are probably 180 degrees out. Align the marks and remove the timing belt then rotate the crankshaft one revolution until the marks are again aligned then replace the belt and you should be fine.

Um, I'm not an expert on this, but isn't this an interference engine and aren't you asking for trouble rotating the crankshaft while the cam (and the valves) are motionless?

Re: Head Job car not starting!!!!

check out your crankshaft sensor first then your camshaft sensor these are often the cause. the only way of testing that is with an obd tester and even then it is posssible that no codes will show up. let me know what you come up with

Re: Re: Head Job car not starting!!!!

4 month old post . . . yea . . . I know.
A friend had the infamous blown head gasket on a '95 Neon SOHC. After replacing the gasked, we couldn't get it started . . . it would crank . . . we had injector pulses . . . spark . . . fuel pump priming and fuel pressure. Did a compression and leak-down test, and so it sat for about a year. Finally I decieded to give it another looksy and read a post that there is a power steering presure switch that feeds into the computer. I topped off the power steering fluid and it started for the first time in over a year!

I know it's not really nice to say, but I can't help it, you actually made a old man laugh. But really, HEAD JOB, CAR NOT STARTING. At 53 I can grin a bit.
From Wayne, hope you take this with a bit of humor.

Re: Re: Head Job car not starting!!!!

The Dodge Neon is indeed a wierd animal! I can provide witnesses if you'd like on this one. The 95 neon sat for about a year, I think it was over a year until I read a post about a similar no-start problem. I topped off the P/S fluid just like the guy did in the post and about 10 of us who had worked on the thing couldn't believe it either. If you have a Neon of the 95 vintage, do you want to try and siphon out most of the P/S fluid and see it the car will start? Actually, my son-in-law encountered another no start problem on his neon last month. he had to thing for a while before rembering to top off the P/S fluid and it then started right up. I believe that it is beyond crazy. If it was my car, I'd drain the P/S fluid and try it. I've been a back-yard mechanic for a long time, and I've never seen anything like this! I can only guess that Daimler-Benz doesn't want to fix P/S pumps on warranty, so they built a circuit to disable the engine if it runs low on P/S fluid!

Re: Head Job car not starting!!!!

Is it only on 95"s that the p/s problem occurs?Because I have a 99 and it leaks like a siv and I know I have started more than once with the p/s system being bone dry.
