Replaced power steering pump now what???

I replaced the power steering pump on my damn 98 GMC but I still have the same problem i had before. When I try to turn at low speed or idle such as adjusting it going into the garage the steering locks up and it takes alot of force to move it. I waish I would found this site before I bought this damn truck. If anybody has any ideas what could be causing this problem plase let me know.

There is a power asst device on the steering shaft under the dash. It tell the pump when to put out more pressure for low speeds and to cut back pressure for highway speeds. They go bad and cause the problems you are talking about.

I'm having the same problem on my 94. does it have an assist sensor?

I had the same issue a few years ago on a '88 K1500 which does not have a power assist. The idler arm was worn out and causing the steering to bind when trying to turn while barely moving or while stopped.

I have a 95 Silvarado and had to replace the steering Box from the wreckers. I put on a new Pitman arm at the same time. The bad news is this steering box feels like there is no power assist just after starting and when cold. When it moves a little the power assist kicks in and works normally till its cold again. Its a pain but it must be a problem with the steering box hydraulics.

Does anyone bleed their P/S pump after installing it? Having air in the lines in the P/S lines is just as bad as air in the brakes or overfilling your A/T and causing foaming of the fluid. Try lifting the front end off the ground so there is no contact with the tires. Start the truck and move the steering wheel lock to lock at least 15-20 times to help get all the air out of the lines. Then go try test driving it. Hope this helps -Chris

It sounds like you have not greased your balljoints in some time, or you have a bad ball joint. My best friend had the same problem and it was dry ball joints. Wally World was supposed to have greased them for over a year and come to find out they didn't do it at all. If it was my truck I would buy a grease gun and lube everything personally to ensure they are done right. The ball joints and other steering compontents could be tough to reach so make sure you get a flex hose for your new grease gun.
