Question New BMR owner, questions on '89 525i

Hi,

I have an ' 89 525i which I picked up and it's a fantastic car, 130k miles, clean, etc. Couple of questions for you all....

1) I want to drain and flush the radiator, but I cannot find the plug. There is a lower spoiler which I removed, but I still cannot access the radiator. Any ideas?

2) On the display by the radio, there are a bunch of buttons, trip set, etc. The display is out. Is this a fuse issue, or will the unit need to be replaced?

3) The hood of the car will not stay open. Can you replace the little hydraulic lifts, or will the whole hood need to be replaced?

Thanks for your input. This is an excellent forum.

J

hey there, congrads you purchased a awsome vehicle. i own a 1992 525i
with 247,00 original miles and that eng is still runing storng...you have have very simple solutions for your following questions.

1) i had the same problem. what i did was just disconnect the lower hose. make sure to remove the bleeder located besides the radiator cap to prevent any unwanted air to stay in the system. if you dont bleed it, it will over-heat.

2)i replaced the whole unit which i purchased from EBAY.com. there's currently about 4 going for about $20. key words e34 on board computer.

3)replace hood shocks. i also purchased from EBAY.com. key word e34 hood shocks.

EBAY is the way to go to find "e34 5" series parts for dirt cheap.

jrod- Thanks for the info! I was hoping that these things were simple to fix!

The little bleed screw next to the radiator cap just broke at the top, with the threaded piece stuck in, and I am leaking coolant from the screw. Any advice??

THanks!
Jeff

Re: 89 e34

hey there, you just might be able to remove that piece with a pair of needle-nose pliers...when you remove the piece, you can purchase piece at your local BMW dealer. its a small piece, so it shouldnt be too expensive...
