My 91 Accord is shifting rough, particularly while slowing down (but kind of while acceleration too). I turned down the idle, and changed the fluid just recently. I'm pretty sure my motor mounts are bad, but is it likely that my tranny is bad, or do I just need new motor mounts? My car is an automatic. It sometimes makes a clanking noise when I get below 10 miles an hour decelerating. Do I invest any more time or money or get rid of the clunker... Please help

Re: 91 Accord tranny problems Please help!!!
Slippage is the kiss-of-death for an auto trans.
If its not slipping, and is shifting when it should, your trans is probably fine. Engine and trans mounts are pretty cheap and easy to install, so I would say its worth doing. When you changed the fluid, did you drop the pan and change the filter? (You should; if you didn't, you should do so.) When the pan is dropped, take a look inside for debris. A moderate amount of grey/black material at the bottom of the pan is normal. If there is large amounts of grey debris, your transmission may be damaged internally, so new mounts are not your biggest problem. |

Re: Re: 91 Accord tranny problems Please help!!!
Everyone told me my car doesn't have a transmission pan, you just drain the fluid and change it. I asked around and bought a transmission filter, but I've understood that it is located on the inside of the transmission and cannot be accessed without cracking open the transmission. When I did change the fluid, it was pretty bad, but the problem did not stop there. I am not getting any trouble codes out of my cpu, but how would I know if my transmission was SLIPPING vs. shifting hard? It doesn't seem to be slipping in my opinion, so if I am going to change the motor and tranny mounts, which one is more likely to be the culprit? I KNOW THE MOTOR MOUNTS ARE BAD, TOO. Would that be the cause, if so how do I fix it.
