1999 Z24 won't start!

Anyone have a similar problem? I turn the car on and I get a weird humming/grinding sound. The lights on the panel blink on and off and the tach goes from 0 to 6000. When I turn the key to start the car it won't start. It turns over, but won't fire. After a while it usually starts, but there doesn't seem to be any method to it all. On occasion when it finally starts the check engine light will come on, but it doesn't stay on when I turn the car off and start it again. Has anyone had similar problems, and if so, what is the resolution?

Or a bad connection to the battery, corroded terminals. Have you had the alternator and battery checked?
