91 Buick PA running hot
I just purchased a 91 Buick PA with only 42,000 miles on it. After changing all fluids on it, along with coolant, thermostat, etc. The car starts to run hot if traffic starts to slow down, as it always does in the Dallas/Ft. Worth TX area. The fans work, I assume it is either the coolant temp sensor, or the fan relay causing a problem, however I can not locate the fan relay. Can anyone tell me where it is, or have any suggestions?? The car is almost perfect and I enjoy it, but the cooling is an issue here is DFW area

Re: 91 Buick PA running hot
I know Dallas tends to border on extreme temperatures; I lived in Garland for awhile.
![]() First, if the fans are running, the relay is working, so you do not need to do anything there. One fan should come on when the air condition is on, regardless of the engine temperature and the other fan should come on at 210 or 215 deg. Have you checked the front air condenser for blockage? (bugs) I always run a 180 deg. thermostat in the hot climates; you might want to consider that also. Stay cool!!

Re: 91 Buick PA running hot
Ive done my share of work on the cooling system in my 91 pa. I've had the water pump replaced, Ive had to replace a rusted out freeze plug in the engine block, and I've had to replace a dead relay for the fans.
I got the pros to do the pump, but I did the freeze plug and relay replacement myself. Other than that, its been very reliable. I got the car in 2000 with 46000 miles and it has 92000 on it now. Good car. |

Re: Re: 91 Buick PA running hot
I think I have finally figured out that the relays are not working correctly. Can you tell me where they are located. I think that they are on the Firewall, just not sure which one(s) it is...

Re: 91 Buick PA running hot
Low speed coolant fan relay is in relay center on firewall on driver's end, #1.
The high speed coolant fan relay is #2 from driver's side. The fuse is #4 from driver's side above the relays. The interior fuse is #16 in fuse panel I still do not understand how the fans are working and the relays are not working correctly. Please elaborate.
