74 nova doesn't shift

I have a 74 nova with a big block in it, with a turbo 350 tranny and a 12 bolt rear end. I put all three in at the same time, now it doesn't shift out of first. I originally had a turbo 400 in it with a tci 2100 stall torque convertor, I thought the shifting problem was the tranny, so I had a guy go through it 4 times and never found anything wrong. So, I assumed he didn't know what he was doing, so I took my turbo 350 to a different guy that builds race car trannys, he beefed up the tranny and put a manual valve body in it. I put the 2100 torque convertor in the turbo 350 and that is where I'm at now. It still wil not shift out of first, even trying to shift it manually. I don't think the rear end is screwed up because it will launch like there's no tomorrow. Any ideas to try would be great.

Thanks!

Sounds like either your modulator is bad or you do not have it hooked up to a manifold vacuum source.

Re: 74 nova doesn't shift

if the torque convertor was bad would it do this. Because I thought the guy that built the tranny said you don't run a modulator i thought it was blocked off maybe i am wrong and i need to lay under the car and look.

It will still shift without the modulator hooked up. My money is on the governor assembly. You should be able to find it without much trouble. It comes out without having to drop the pan, you may have a spring clip on the cover that holds it. Any good tranny shop can swap it out in like 15 minutes and they rebuild yours, so they should have them on the shelf.

We used to drop them out of the TH400s and wire the weights shut so it would stay in 1st gear on stock cars.

The governor is behind the cover on the driver's side rear. Governors go for about $35. Check out the link to a great picture.

Good luck, Bob
