noise from middle of truck

Hey everyone,

I know this is going to be hard to figure out, but here is what i have been able to figure out my self. The truck 98 rodeo 4x4 is making sorta a grinding/ratteling noise like metal hitting and flapping around at around 2500-2700 rpm's no other speeds, its not coming from the engine area, i went under the truck and it sounds like it is coming from the middle of the car. Any thoughts? The noise will stay the same as long as i keep it between 2500-2700 rpm's sounds like ratteling? thanks

Oh and also it does the same thing in Park, Neutral, and Drive

Mike

p.s i think it might be a heat shield?

that is my guess too. a heat shield.

Or there is something letting lose in the muffler.

Yep, sounds like something on the exhaust. Maybe something loose in one of the catalytic converters. Get under there with a rubber mallet, tap around and/or feel/listen for anything loose.
G/luck

Re: noise from middle of truck

Just fixed this same thing on mine, it was the two heat shields on the exhaust. The spot weld broke loose on one end. These are located in the bends on the exhaust from each side of the engine, just after the manifold. I fixed it the cheap way, by putting some hose clamps around them and cranking them down. Now, no noise. Let me tell ya it drove nuts sitting at a drive thru window and accelerating on the freeway.
