4WD Question

I'm new to Jeeps and 4WDs and had a question about the 4WD lever on my 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. There are 3 options, 4W High, N, and 4W Low. For regular driving do you want to have the lever in the N position? Can I just change it into that position when i turn my car on?

Thanks for the help.

if its a 97 then i could help you out but i need to know what engine is in the jeep. with that said you should have a 2wd option. my advuce is to leave it in 2wd unless your going mudding. you do not need 4wd at all for road use. flip the visor on the drivers side and you will see that it has a list of what each position is used for. you never ever put the transfer case in to neutral. you still need the transfer case even in two. the only reason its there is in case your jeep breaks down (ha fat cance) then it just disengages the axles to make it easier to tow the jeep with. i can give you alot more info and others can if you give more info. i have a 1994 jeep grand cherokee 4.0l inline six and im using my jeep as a reference. do a serch to fine out what you need. if im wrong please corect me

Re: 4WD Question

your jeep is equiped with quadra-trac. normal driving is done in 4 high. in this position the transfer case senses wheel slip and locks in the 4x4 automatically by way of a viscous coupler. neutral disengages the drive train from the engine so you can tow it. 4 low is for really deep do-do. it's a granny gear and only goes about 5 miles an hour no matter how much gas you give it.
