2001 Trooper MPG ?

Ok, I just bought a 2001 Trooper with 35,000 on it. The first tank of highway gas was showing about 13 MPG - whew, thats bad. Then a tank of in town gas showed about 13 MPG - ok. Then I unplug the battery(someone says it resets the computer?), drive about 80mi. on hilly back roads, fill up and check MPG again - 18.5 MPG - do what? Next highway tank shows 15 MPG. My question is this - what is up with the gas milage and what should I be getting? Also, what can I do to fix it? The car runs great and I have checked tire pressure and changed the air filter - will check the EGR this week. Thanks for all your help ahead of time.

Jason

MPG's for a 1998+ trooper are usually around the high teens. My cousin had a 2001 & currently has a 2002. The best he gets is around 17mpg. Very typical for a large, full framed, 4x4 SUV.

Re: 2001 Trooper MPG ?

change the pcv or at least spray it out with some carb cleaner.

Clean up the egr tube too (see the faq's).

Jason, if she runs smooth, quiet and you dont have a CEL, I'd leave the champions since you only have 35Kmi on them. When it comes time to change, mail-order a set of denso's. I know the MPG's sux, especially with todays price at the pumps, but that's how it is with this type of truck. .

Re: 2001 Trooper MPG ?

Can anyone tell me how to time a 3.2 V6 Engine in a 1995 Isuzu Trooper II with SOHC?

Re: Re: 2001 Trooper MPG ?

Thanks for all of your help guys - Rodeo02, you say that 13mpg is how it is with these trucks - but you said previously that high teens should be expected? Do you think I should worry, what should I expect for gas mileage. I am of the thought that even if it seems to run right, if your gas mileage is off, somthing is wrong and it needs to be fixed. Let me know what you think. Thanks again for all the replies,
Jason

I get the same with our '99, have changed the plugs, cleaned egr & tube, used injector cleaner, checked tire pressure, and changed to synthetic oil. We get from 12-13 all city, and as much as 19 highway. My wife drives it and is pretty heavy footed, can not seem to get her to change! I think that the synthetic oil will get you 1-1.5 better.

Re: 2001 Trooper MPG ?

There is some good info posted for this on the following:
http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...hlight=trooper

bjayjohnson mentioned that the following combo of products will get you to 22-24 MPG (I found URLs for the product to shorten your search)...

1. Fuel Power by LCD ($33/gallon)
2. Lube Control by LCD ($33/gallon)
- Extends oil changes to 10K
3. Auto-Rx (~$25/bottle)
4. Synthetic Oil--Mobil 1 or Amsoil Series 2000
-
5. Dual Guard By-pass filtration by Amsoil, Inc. (probably to damn expensive as price was not listed)
-Filter mag was also mentioned as cheaper solution for the by-pass.

The site www.bobistheoilguy.com he mentioned has some good info on oils.

Don't know about the info provided I am willing to try something to get better milage. With gas at ~$3/gal, these items may pay for themselves.

Good Luck,
TroutFisher

Good Luck,

I've been using FP and LC for a couple years now. I don't notice a gain in MPG's at all with my rodeo or van. They are supposedly one of the best cleaners around though. And they are great people to deal with. My engines, trans, power steering systems do look spotless & I run nothing but inexpensive lubes along with occasional does of LC. A gallon of each lasts me about a year.

G/luck
