97 Grand Cherokee Ltd. stereo problem

Looks like there are some folks who know what they're talking about on here, so maybe someone can help me out. A few years back I bought a used 97 Gr. Cherokee Limited. The previous owner had installed an alpine cd player into the dash. From the factory, this vehicle had an Infinity casette/am/fm stereo system in it (the owner told me this prior to purchase). My problem is, the speakers sound horrible. I don't know whether this simply bad speakers, or whether it has something to do with this aftermarket cd player that was installed. I've heard that if these are not installed properly on a car that previously had a system in it (like the infinity) that this would occur. Could it be that if I found a factory infinity unit and installed it, my problems would be solved? Or, are my speakers simply blown?

When I first bought the car, I had one of the speakers replaced (thinking that my speakers were indeed blown) and soon after, the new speaker began acting up as well.

I'm not very knowledgeable in this area as can probably be seen, but any help would be greatly appreciated. I love my jeep but the stereo situation just has to be solved.

thanks,
Mike

Re: 97 Grand Cherokee Ltd. stereo problem

The factory speakers work on a 2 ohms, the factory deck is mostlikly putting out 4, the only way is to check the speakers in the door to see if they are the factory ones.

I have a 98 with the factory system, it's great, but the factory speakers are junk, however better 2 ohm replacments can be got. The factory replacments are big $$ and they will fail, but if you get aftermarket speakers made by Infinity your steps ahead in the game.

this is just one of the better speakers offered I have these on my list to buy, they are not cheap, but you can find cheaper speakers.

But since you have an aftermarket system, you will have to take your modle # and get the info that way so you know what kinda of speakers to replace it with.

I would go back to the factory deck with CD, you get to use your steering wheel controls again and the resale of the jeep is better. Ebay at times has loads of the head units, and they can be very cheap. Make sure you get shipping insrance and or paypal insurance before buying stuff like that.

Re: 97 Grand Cherokee Ltd. stereo problem

Chances are they just replaced the head unit, and not the amp. If you have the factory amp, you sould stay with 2 ohm speakers. You can, however, change the amp out and then your speaker selection is wide open.

On the steering wheel buttons, do you have the factory head unit? If so, these buttons work thru the data bus so you'll have to put a scanner on it. I have heard rumors that there are aftermarket systems that can work with the wheel buttons, but I've not seen them.

Re: 97 Grand Cherokee Ltd. stereo problem

I found a webpage on a 5.9 and the page was about his mods to his jeep, and one of them he hired a pvt radio place to wire up his buttons on the steering wheel, I seen the pictures and it was no cake walk and surely it was just cheaper to replace the radio with the orignal stuff.

Replaceing the factory unit yourself =

A.great sounds
B.Saved money
C.All of the above

___________

as to

Sending your jeep to some "Boom Boom" speaker shop to "un do" the insides on your jeep =

A.Your here for the Alarm ..right?
B.The kid woking on it quit, but I know a guy!
C.The smoke is normal, just dont use the buttons.
