2002 cracks in glass top

I just picked up a used 2002 Corvette with a glass top. There a couple of small cracks in the top. They are about 1/2 long coming up from the rain gutter on the sides. They can be felt with your fingernail in the top but I don't think they go thru. I took it back to a dealer with under 36,000 miles on it and they said they were scratched. I said they could be scratches since they go down into the gutter and that couldn't get scratched in that area. Then they said that they are wear and tear. They wouldn't do anything about it. Anybody else have any experience with this type of problem?

Re: 2002 cracks in glass top

I've always loved the slick design of the 2002 Corvette Z06.

the Z06 does NOT have a removeable or glass top. Only the coupes do. No coupe is a Z06 Sorry

Re: 2002 cracks in glass top

he said it didnt have a glass top, w/o means without, thats why he said he cannot imagine the quality of the glass top.

as far as the tinting flaking off the right side of the top, i worked as a corvette specialist for about a year and only saw that happen once, we even had the GM rep come out and look at it, she had never seen it, and we replaced the top for the customer. as far as the cracks, thats new to me, the only thing i can think of is that the rear locking mechenisim is too tight, it is adjustable, and if someone cranked it down in the attempt to "improove" the seal of the top agains the weather stripping, it is putting entirely too much stress on the top and actualy warping and cracking it everytime you latch it.

Oops, my bad. I read the "w/o a.." real quick and must have read "w/a"...

As far as the cracks they aren't cracks per se, but just thousands of tiny slivers in the plastic. Like an old piece of plexiglass. It's pretty common from what I have read on corvetteforum. And the clearcoat flaking on the right side is not as common, but does happen - and only on the right side from what I have seen/read. Mine started doing it after the car was out of warranty (big suprise). No free new top for me

Re: 2002 cracks in glass top

fair enough, oh and you might want to push a little harder on that replacement top, the car we did was out of warranty, thats why the gm rep had to come out and look at it. and she told us to replace it, even though it was out of warranty. guess it depends on the person though.

Question Corvette Targa top (glass) free replacement C5 (2002) or C6

If anyone has an orignal C5 Targa top 2002 or later that has lots of small cracks in it (web like) and that top has a part marking LEXARCOAT1008, please contact me. If it is due to sun damage I'd be willing to replace it with a new OEM part. I would also be interested in replacing any C6 roof.

Jon

(please contact only if C5 is 2002 or later with "LEXARCOAT1008" or if it is a C6)

This unfortunately is quite normal for many coupe owners with
the Lexan top. I'm sure there were some dealers out there that
warranty the top, but it usually seems to get profoundly worse
when the car is PAST warranty(go figure)

You can try some of the Vette forums in the want-ads/for sale
of people selling a top because they have the painted metal top
and don't want 2.

I've heard a few companies that 'refurbish', but I've heard that
is a mixed bag.

I HAVE A 99 VETTE THAT IS DOING THE SAME THING ON A FACTORY TOP...RIGHT SIDE HAS WIDE STRIPE FROM FRONT TO BACK AND LEFT SIDE HAS LARGE CIRCLE PEELING AWAY...LOOKS LIKE HELL! I'VE READ ON OTHER FORUMS THAT OTHERS ARE HAVING THE SAME TROUBLE.
