Why not thermostat controlled AC compressors?
Here's some food for thought for the seasoned mechanics out there that have seen an Air Conditioner compressor fail. I just want to know why no one (GM universe) has thought of having the AC compressor "kick" on and off based on the temparature setting on your climate control. This would save gas and keep from having to subscribe to the rather ridiculous notion of mixing "heat" with the AC to keep from freezing to death! On one of my long trips, I was constantly punching the AC button in Vent mode to adjust the temparature in the car. I was shocked to hear that even my friend's brand new Chevy Avalanche doesn't temparature-switch the compressor on and off. BIG QUESTION: Is this asking for trouble with incredible wear on the clutch? The PCM computer handles engine load demands quite nicely even with the cruise control engaged when you pop on the AC at highway speed, so why not?
Any thoughts? |

Re: Why not thermostat controlled AC compressors?
Because it costs significantly more. Many cars have it as an option. Just look for electronic temperature control. I know my friends Grand Prix GTP does it. Many higher end "luxury" vehicles also do it. High end and luxury don't exactly describe a cavalier. Low end and basic would be better descriptors.
