I have an auto-transm 2003 Silverado Ext. Cab 4x4 that has a high pitch clicking sound when I give the truck gas - the speed of the clicking seems to follow how hard you are pushing down the gas pedal. As I pull out from a light - I can hear the clicking increase in volume and frequency. If I let off the gas, it stops. It sounds like its coming from the rear of the truck. I don't notice it when I have the truck in neutral or park, or when I am at high speeds - mostly when I pull out from a stop. Any suggestions ?

Re: Rear end clicking - 2003 5.3L 4x4 Ext. Cab
I'm struggling why giving it gas makes is increase in volume, even when there is no senses change in speed - is the fuel pump near the back on '03 silverados ? The U-joint is a scary thought.

Re: Rear end clicking - 2003 5.3L 4x4 Ext. Cab
I would lean towards the u-joint. Then sound will increase with the speed because you are accellerating and as you accellerate the drive shaft spins faster thus causing the sound you hear to gofaster as well.

I say change your u-joints, i have a 99 Z-71. my u-joints go out about every 30 to 40 thousand miles. I was told the automatics are a lot harder on the u-joints in these trucks. I also have a huge aluminum drive shaft that seems to scare some shops. I've been told numerous times that they wouldnt change them because of the driveshaft. Well like I said and a few other people on here suggested: Change the u-joints. Its fairly inexpensive. Well goodluck and let us know if it was something different.

Re: Rear end clicking - 2003 5.3L 4x4 Ext. Cab
u joints are fairly easy...get a vise or a 6" c clamp ( i used the c clamp") and get a smaller socket than the end cap....And just push out the old ujoint ends...Check them first.....pull the drive shaft by making sure the parking brake is on and block all the wheels..then pull the driveshaft using a 10mm socket and feel the ujoints u can tell if they are shot or not....they should move freely and smooth...
