99 silverado tough to start

just bought this truck
the old owner told me about this but i never realized just how bad it was

anyway

when i start it for the first timei nthe day it cranks for like 8-10 seconds before itll fire

then itll run like crap for about 10 seconds before it is idling ok
the idle has a very very slight bump to it i can feal occasionally almost liek a quick stumble

maybe its normal

if you shut it off and then immediately fire it right back up itll start right up

if you let it sit ffor say 10 min
it spins for 10 seconds before it fires

If you put the key in and turn it to on but not start and let it sit for maybe 15 seconds it seems to start easier

Im thinking maybe thats allowing the fuel pump to prime or something like that?

anyway I was going to go up and buy a fuel filter today and see what that does

anyone else have any ideas

oh its got 106k on it and its a 4x4 automatic

Re: 99 silverado tough to start

Sounds to me like the Idle air control motor. My old mitsubishi mighty max did the same thing and turned out to be the idle air control motor. Looking in my repair manual the silverados have an idle air control valve. i would suggest getting a diagnostic first to tell you exactly what the problem could be.

Re: 99 silverado tough to start

ok guys heres the update
I think its fixed
it turns over 1 time and fires now
i replaced the fuel pressure regulator and the fuel filter

it took about 2 days to go away most likely because i ended up draing the fuel rail and it needed to fill it back up

but i beleive it is fixed

Re: 99 silverado tough to start

yea its fixed now

I thought i updated this post
about 2 days later the problem came back
so it was just a fluke that the fuel presure regulator fixed it
it ended up being my fuel pump
I bought one on Ebay for 150 shipped brand new
ac delco oem unit

and put it in
problem solved

really isnt that tough to put it in
I dropped the tank

if you have a place to put the gas, after you drop the tank drain it out and then reinstall it
itll be much easier to do then

I have the SAME problem. Every one i know with the same model truck has the problem to. I replaced the fuel filter, spark plugs, clean throttle body. Did not fix it. But my check motor light would come on. I had a firend runa computer on it and that problem was the mass air flow sencer. Still have the starting problem after replacing that. I will replace the fuel pump now. THANX
