Folks,
I've got a 96 3rd gen Toyota Camry that I'm attempting to remove the drive shaft from on the passenger's side (RH). The shaft is supposed to slide out once you remove the bearing set screw and the retainer clip... ...of course, it's not proviving to be that easy at all. I can not get the bearing w/ intermediate shaft to come out. The design incorporates a roller bearing attached to an intermediate shaft at the end of the driveshft assembly. [intermediateshft-bearing (inside mount)-inner CV-Shaft-outter CV] How to hell do I get the bearing and shaft out of the rear motor mount? Is there a tool or something I can purchase, etc??? Thanks, Gerhard |

Re: 3rd Gen Right Hand Drive Shaft Removel Issue -HELP!
You don't get it out - at least easily...
Read the post in the FAQ concerning this subject.

Re: 3rd Gen Right Hand Drive Shaft Removel Issue -HELP!
Never mind... I finally found it.
The problem I've got is that at this point I need to get the half shaft out... I've done way to much pounding on that sucker and damaged the raceway covers on the transaxle and the mount side. How does one remove the rear engine mount with the half shaft still attached? |

Re: 3rd Gen Right Hand Drive Shaft Removel Issue -HELP!
I know the FAQ suggest removing the rear engine mount. However, I did it without removing the mount. The secret is to use a vary long brass punch, 24". Hold it against the raceway bearing and use a sludge hammer to hammer it out.
This will require 2 people, as one must hold the punch and the other one work the hammer. What I also did was use A LOT of WD-40, and let it soak over night. When work the hammer, hit it hard, don't be shy. As most of replacement CV shaft came with new raceway bearing anyway. ASM |

You might have had better luck with penetrating oil instead of WD40, but good job anyway - It worked in the end.
![]() I'll put your solution in the FAQ as an alternative. PS I couldn't find any reference that recommends remove the rear engine mount. Maybe I'm just blind.

Assuming you will be using jack stand, when operating the hammer and the punch, make sure both person are not on the creeper, as the creeper puts you much closer to the car, and is not as stable as if you on your back on the ground.
When I did the CV shaft job year, I had one final plan if the hammer and punch fail to do the trick. Please note that I have never try this my self, but in theory, it should work... 1. Soak the raceway bearing with penetrating oil. 2. Hammer the engine mount lightly to help the penetrating oil penetrat. 3. Drill a hole right through the raceway next the shaft and leave the drill bit in the hole or insert some high strength bolt, in effect you are disabling the raceway bearing from turning. 4. Put the car back down on the ground with all 4 wheel.s 5. Start the engine and put the car in gear 6. If you have AT, just let go of the brake to let the car move about 2 inch 7. Stop the engine and jack the car back up At the end, either the raceway bearing would be lose, or the drill bit you have inserted earlier would have snaped in half. Of course, if this still fail to do the trick, you may just have to remove the engine mount to get the shaft out... ASM |

Re: 3rd Gen Right Hand Drive Shaft Removel Issue -HELP!
That last idea was very interesting!
I'm partially appaled by the design of this drive shaft / half shaft. My thought was to use two medium sized pullers and then fasten one on each side of the bearing from the trans side. (You have to remove the bearing cover on the intermediate shaft.) ...and then start torquing them evenly in hopes that the bearing will pop out. The biggest issue here is the complete lack of room to perform the opperation... this includes attempting to remove the rear engine mount. That just plain old annoyed me... all 3 bolts that I saw protude from the mount, make it impossible to remove the mount with the half shaft still inserted into the transaxle. I eventually gave up and had the car towed to a shop due to time constraints. Thanks all! Gerhard |

Re: 3rd Gen Right Hand Drive Shaft Removel Issue -HELP!
Yeah, I also did trid the puller method. However, it was difficual to find the proper size of puller to fit the tight space. I went through every puller Autozone has in the rent-a-tool inventory!!
Any way, it is always fun trying... ASM |
