1989 nissan sentra

i have a 1989 nissan sentra while starting it the other day i pressed the clutch to start it it was fine, then i pressed it again to shift in reverse then i heard a crunching sound the felt a break underneath the pedal it felt like. no the clutch pedal goes all the way to the floor with no resistance at all, the car will still start but cant press clutch to shift into gear. the clutch has no resistance and is totally loose, when its fully depressed i can see a gray wire slightly move( the wire runs underneath hood). there is no other movement or broken pieces around pedal

Re: 1989 nissan sentra

I don't know much about the clutch system on a Sentra.

In general a clutch is disengaged either by a cable or a hydraulic system.

With a hydraulic system there is a rod that goes through the firewall and into the clutch master cylinder to increase fluid pressure in the slave cylinder which moves the clutch fork, pressing on the throw-out bearing, which itself pushes on the pressure plate, and releases the clutch disc from the flywheel.

A cable operated clutch works in a similar fashion, but is a bit simplier. Look behind the clutch pedal. There must either be a rod connected to it, or a cable. If there are neither, (which I suspect) there your problem lies.)

Re: 1989 nissan sentra

the b12 sentras have cable cluches only. look and see if you snappped the cable. look at the brake booster on the fire wall and just Forward, and down from it you should see the swing arm on top of the transaxle see if you cable is hooked or not .it sounds like you have a busted or worn out cable.

the car will still start because of the neural safty switch at the end of the the cluch petal's swing. if you look up at the petal it self you will see the button where the petal touches, also see if the cable is still
connected there as well. let me know what you find out. hope this
helps.
