97 eighty eight stalling
My car randomly stalls. Sometimes it only sputters and the gas pedal doesn't work to increase the speed. If let it sit, it starts up fine or with sputtering but then it passes and drives fine. I gave my car in to a mechanic and he insisted it was the fuel pump. He said he tested it and gave it power and it was weak.It also generated a code o2 sensor and misfire. He claimed the fuel pump could do that. Well $600 later new fuel pump and filter and new air filter as I pulled out of the mechanic it stalled. I let it sit and after a couple of restarts it caught but it was still sputtering like all the cylinders weren't working. It wouldn't go over 5 mph when revving then the sputtering stopped and it started driving normally. It also generated a code random cylinder misfire. While it was stalled or sputtering he did a fuel pressure test with the new fuel pump and it wouldn't go over 20 and the needle was jumping all over. He changed the fuel pump again on the chance the first one was faulty. Also changed the fuel pump relay and the Fuel Pressure Regulator. Still broken. I noticed that when it happens either the power windows don't work (I only know the drivers buttons) or they do and by opening the window or shutting the window before the stall happens while the engine is going crazy it starts to drive normally. It seems to be electric but where should I start. I''m going crazy.

Re: 97 eighty eight stalling
i know this sounds simple but you need to check the alternator. it could cause everything youre saying. no other single componant on that thing could cause all of those faults at one time except the alternator.

The alternator is only about 6 months old

Re: 97 eighty eight stalling
its an alternator and probably a reman one at that. ive seen plenty of um bad out of the box. it only takes a minute to see if this thing is charging when it starts acting up. its possible that its even over charging from what youve explained.

Re: 97 eighty eight stalling
If you have a basic set of tools, you can take the alternator off and bring it to a local auto parts store. They usually have alternator testers and test them for free.

Re: 97 eighty eight stalling
Loosen the tensioner pully (18 or 19 mm) w/ at least a 1/2 inch socket wrench and remove the belt first.
Alternator mount bolts: 13mm Upper Elec. Connector: Unplugs Lower Elec. Connector: 6, 7, 8 mm (don't remember exactly. Pretty simple stuff.

Re: 97 eighty eight stalling
It was a bad ground. There is a bundle of wires under the drivers side door jam. The ground for the fuel pump and the windows and powerlock is spliced together and it was loose.
