Noisy

Can someone tell me why my mirage is so noisy while I drive it? Is it the muffler or more than that? Also why does it use so much gas?

on my 2001 mirage there is a flexible exhaust pipe routing beneath the motor to the rest of the exhaust. this is connected with a flange. often the flange area is a weak area due to flaring, bending and or welding and it may be this area has finally given it up. sounds like an exhaust leak in that area, just under the firewall perhaps near the gas pedal. start it up (in park and park brake set) and get out and listen. has the check engine light come on? Only thing I can think of on the excess gas consumption is the engine senses a lean condition and is trying to make up for with extra fuel, I don't know if mitsus are that refined. if you get the exhaust repaired the computer may get a normal signal for the fuel injection to work properly. There could be other causes for the noise but it sure sounds like an exhaust problem somewhere in or near the engine compartment.
