need help check engine code PO442

hello!,
I have a 1998 golf gl, 5speed, check engine code PO442:"EVAP Emission Control System Leak (small)". The car runs fine, with no problems, however I would like to know what this means, how to fix it and if is not "wise" to drive the car. the car has 122k. also, according to the miles - do I need to replace timming belt?.
thanks for the help.!!

Re: need help check engine code PO442

The gas tank system is sealed so vapor cannot get out, there is a leak in the EVAP sysem that keeps it sealed. Check all the little vacuum hoses around the engine, they commonly crack & fray. The belt should have been changed at least once by now.

Highly improbable unless you are smelling raw gas.
