Can I get away with it?
I was trying to find out where I had an exhaust leak on my 88 N/A when
I found out that my manifold was completely cracked in half. Not to hard to replace. Then I looked a little closer and saw that a stud was snapped off, the one closest to the driver on the head. I'm pretty sure that it snapped off flush. My question is can I get away with just replacing the manifold without replacing the stud. It is sealed right now but will it seal when I replace the manifold. If I have to replace the stud do I have the daunting task of taking off the head. HELP |

where is the broken stud?
if there is another closer stud, i see no reason why it shouldn't be ok. but then again...studs dont break without someone breaking them so i have a feeling that someone has already replaced something on there and broke the stud off themselves. this could be the current reason why you have an exhaust leak. take it off...if it is a blown gasket or something then i would try to just bolt it back down. but if the gasket looks fine and everything was tight and it was just leaking air from where there was no stud, then you will obviously need to replace the stud or find another means of bolting it down. make sure you use a good sealant on the gasket...

Re: Can I get away with it?
The only thing leaking is where the exhaust manifold cracked in half. The crack is in between two ports on the long portion of the manifold. The stud that is broken is the one closest to the driver. The one that connects the manifold to the head. there are 8 studs on the head that you would put the exhaust manifold onto before you put on the spacer and then the nut.
So, what I'm trying to explain is, I have to replace the header that is cracked, but do I have to worry about the new gasket that I have to put on when I replace the header since the stud is on the end. |

Re: Can I get away with it?
i would always replace the gasket if you have the manifold off, especialy if you are getting a new manifold. i would ask a local shop and see how much it would be to replace the stud, just to find out just in case.
