Heads... Answeres needed! Rebuilding my 305.

Hi everyone. Just for those of you who don't already know, I've got an 84 Caprice... 305 V8, Rochester Q-jet. On only 68K it needs a rebuild... the rings are shot (did miserably on a compresson test, and blowin' blue smoke, and tons of blowby) probably because the car was beat on pretty badly before I got it (The guy stated that the car used ta scream until he bent a push rod... go figure) Anyway... I kinda wanna beef up the engine while its torn down... cam, roller rockers, maybe some other small things, but what I'm really interested in is heads. The machanic that towed our van home a few months ago mentioned to me that different heads would really give me a boost in power, but I never figured I'd be willing to do something like that, so I didn't get all the info (which I now regret). What kind of heads could I use that would give me a good deal of power, even though its only a 305 (I was hoping maybe 200-ish horses total. Nothing too special). I also wanna keep the same bolt pattern as stock of possible. Any info would be great. Thanks guys!

Re: Heads... Answeres needed! Rebuilding my 305.

I read in an article about World Products S/R Torquer, go to summit racing website and check it out. Supposedly a very good head for the 305. You can always go the L31 Vortec head way, but i think that would be more difficult than the World Products head. You can try porting the stock ones, i am going to try that soon.

Actually for the 305 you would want the L30 heads not the L31. Same basic design. Just the L30 heads for the 305.

Re: Heads... Answeres needed! Rebuilding my 305.

Why not opt for a 350? The 305 won't make the power as easily as the 350, and 350's are plentiful.

BTW, the stock 305 did create decent power. In my 1989 it WILL break the wheel loose & that's with 2:56's. I busy drifting in a parking lot today (w/out the parking break. Just throttle)

Re: Heads... Answeres needed! Rebuilding my 305.

I wanna keep my 305 for a couple of reasons... fuel prices are rediculous. I thought about a V6, but then I figured I'd never want anything smaller than an 8... Anyway also, I wanna keep the car itself fairly stock. If I can get a little but over 200 horsepower, I'll be happy.
