Very odd idling issue

I've read through a few of the threads here, and am considering an oil change and replacing the plugs and wires today. Just looking for insight from anyone else who might understand this issue.

About two weeks ago I noticed that the engine started idling very roughly when the AC was turned on. It felt at times like the engine was misfiring, and the car wanted to lurch slightly from a full stop.

I stopped running the AC and ran a bottle of STP fuel injector cleaner through after two consecutive fill ups at the gas station.

This seemed to help for a few days, but now, even with the AC off I will occasionally get a rough idle at traffic lights, and when the car feels like it is misfiring it wants to lurch forward.

Any ideas?

Start with the plugs and wires, it can't be too major (like a coil pack or a sensor) or you would be getting a service engine light.

Start with the plugs...they will throw a code, but not always. Replace them with the stock champions, DO NOT BUY PLATINUM PLUGS FOR YOUR NEON.

Thumbs up

Thanks guys!

I changed the oil and checked for any coolant in the oil, much to my relief there was none.

Checked the air filter system, no carbon in the hoses, another relief.

Changed out the plugs and wires, and that seemed to do the trick.

Hopefully we'll be able to keep my 03 Neon SE running like a kitten for a few more years.
