my 91 98 olds regency likes to die

for some reason if I dont let the car warm up for at least 10 mins. regardless off the weather it dies when i put it in gear. Not all the time but quite often. It also dies sometime when im sitting at a red light for a miniute and go to hit the gas. Itll also die sometimes if im backing up then put it in gear to go BAM it dies. I imagine it needs a tune. My mom who owned the car b4 never had one done. Now it has about 138K miles on it. It runs like a champ besides the fact of it diein when it does. I just replaced the air filter in it. the old one had a date of 98 on it and was damn near black. I also noticed the other day 3 of the 6 spark plug wires looked a little rusty. anyway i was trying to figure out what could be causeing the car to die like does.

Is your check engine light on? If not then try your usual maintance stuff. I'd check out the PCV valve and the fuel filter first, then go after the plugs and plug wires.

If those aren't your problems, then you may have a coil pack or ignition module problem.

You may need to reset the computer then. Turn your car to the accesories mode and then disconnect your battery for at least half an hour. Reconnect your battery, start the car and if your light comes on then you still have issues with the car.

BTW, you will lose your radio presets so you may want to write them down before you disconnect your battery.
