Question Mid 89' Electra Limited will not start!

The Electra I'm working on will turn over, but won't run unless you have your foot on the accelerator. Then it just plan runs like grap and stalls. I have check the onboard diagnostics and I got back no codes. I had a buick mechanic look at it and he says it just needs a new fuel pump, filter, and strainer. I replaced all three and also the fuel regulator and still no luck. I was wondering if I need to reset the ECU (PCM) or replace the ROM inside the ECU. I know that the car is getting plenty of gas. Does anyone have any sugestions? Also, the ignition module, MAF sensor, spark plugs and spark plug wires are all brand new, less than 2 months old.

Re: Mid 89' Electra Limited will not start!

Ok, I'm also trying to figure an 89 out. Here is what I have done to the one I am working on. Crank sensor, Cam Sensor, Ignition control module and coil pack, Magnet on cam gear, new cam gear, new crank gear and chain. Changed the oil sending unit thinking it might be turning of the fuel circuit.
Here is how I have rigged my 89 with test equipment to help me figure out what is happening.
I have an old style timing light hooked up to a spark plug wire so that it will flash at all times.
I have a fuel rail pressure gage hooked up so that it will tell me how much pressure I have available at all times.
I have a Noid test light hooked up to the fuel injector lead so that I will know if the signal is being sent to the injector.
What my 89 is doing is the following.
It did start and run from 2 seconds to several minutes then it would just shut off like somebody turned the ignition swithch off. I would still have spark, fuel at the rail was constant 35psi, and good voltage coming into the fuel injector lead, but after it shut off I would loose injector pulse.
After changing everything listed above, I started it and ran it at high rpm for several minutes and now it won't start at all.
My best guess is that the computer is fried on the injector side.
Can you be more specific about your problem.

hpneon,

I have had a similar issue with my 89 PA; however it is intermittent. Once every month or two the engine will crank but not start unless I hold just a little throttle in it. (just crack the throttle enough to make it idle) If you relax the throttle pressure the engine will die immediately. In my case I suspect that the IAC is not opening during initial start. After the engine runs for a while, the IAC will open and the engine will idle normally. The ECM (computer) controls the IAC. In my case I suspect an intermittent ECM problem, because I have removed and thoroughly cleaned the IAC and cleaned all of the electrical grounds and connections for the ECM. Since this only occurrs occasionally, and it is self-correcting, I have not bothered to replace the ECM.

Regards,

rksk

Re: Mid 89' Electra Limited will not start!

where are the grounds located for the ECM. Of course the one on the battery and where the cable connects to the block under the ignition control module. Is there a place near the ECM in the vehicle? I hope it's not behind the relay panel behind the glove box. But if it is could you discribe it's location.
I'm going to the junk yard to get a used ECM and another coil/ICM for my other 90 buick, last week one of the 3 coil packs went out, but the car still runs on only 4 cylinders. Daughters go to school car, wouldn't ya know.
I''ll also get a used ECM for the 89. I'll let ya know if that is the problem

Well, after going through and trying some of the things posted in the forum, I still got nothing. I took the car back to the shop that has done all of the previous work on it and they got the thing running in an afternoon. The mechanic called and said that he would need to replace the MAF sensor, in order to start the car to see what else could be the problem. I just had the MAF sensor replaced around two months ago by the same guy. I reminded him that he had just replaced it, so he gave me credit for the new MAF sensor and that fixed the problem. I payed nothing at the shop and ended up losing 250.00 on the new fuel system.
That goes to show you that you can't always count on new parts to not be the problem.
