93 Bonneville not starting

i have a 93 bonneville and it has been sitting for awhile, before it was sitting it was running fine. i would go out and start it every now and then, but the battery went dead and didnt start it for awhile, now i tryn to start it and it just turns over, i figure it isnt getting any fire.
does anyone have any tips about what i should check first.
a mechanic at work said the harmonic balancer has a fin on the back that might have got rusty and making it not to fire right????
any help would be appreaciated.

this site has helped me countless times before, so THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH

your mechanic is probably correct the worst thing for a car is to let it sit,,to be sure try all the obviuos,,check for spark ,,then try fuel in the little shradder valve in the line on top of engine in fuel rail (looks like a tire valve stem),,if you have spark and fuel then it should fire one has to be missing,,the problem with the balancer(crank shaft position sensor) is it has a plastic shield over it and is a major headache to get too to check for rust,,good luck
