My friend just gace me a 91 maxima for free, only problem is the transmission wont shift till it warms up for about 20 mins... this is the 2nd transmission. Other than this problem the car looks awesome! What year transmissions should i look for? Is it a nightmare to do? any suggestions are greatly appreciated....

Second - or second tranny acting weird?

- check fluid level, color
- measure voltage at batt, TCU
- clean all computer controlled tranny connectors
- run self diag.

...do in this order; see http://www.cardomain.com/ride/748507/15

Re: 91 maxima transmission dead

I was told the first one lasted about 120k, this one is a rebuild that only got 30k... The car has been sitting 2 years.. The interior is like new, body is great. The owner told me it slips sometimes in 1st and 2nd, and sometimes wont shift till its warmed up. Thanks for the info!

Re: 91 maxima transmission dead

I just got it home. The transmission slips when its warmed up. I thought the battery was dead, but when I disconect the neg terminal... it dies. Im guessing the alt is shot.

- Low voltage causes tranny slip as tranny solenoid coils are starved.
- Alt: Read also page 5
- If its really alternator , open all its rear nuts[Hitachi LR190-737], force shroud backpart out, clean. Regulator ground to alt shroud might be oxidized =disconnected. (do not take out pulley).

Re: 91 maxima transmission dead

Just changed the alt, it was definitly bad. Drove it for about 20 mins. Shifts better, but still a little hard. It also has a slight shudder when almost stopped or when im about to take off. i had a 94 Cavalier like that turned out it was the lock up solenoid. does this car have one also?
