I think I've finally worn the gas cap out.
It doesn't click anymore when tightening it down. I noticed a few times that the cap couldn't be locked down on the filler. No SES yet. New cap time? |

Re: Fuel Cap?
It's a $10 item so I'd say just replace it. If it is bad, it fixes the problem. If it's not necessarily bad, it's a cheap "preventive maintenance".

Don't think cost is the issue. "...If it is bad, it fixes the problem. If it's not necessarily bad, it's a cheap 'preventive maintenance'...." What problem am I fixing that hasn't surfaced yet other than it doesn't click like it used to? It's not triggering a code and I haven't lost fuel yet. I'm just curious to know if others have experienced this yet. |

Good evening.....the "problem" with a leaking gas cap is that you're can lose gas vapors to the atmosphere. It is considered an emission, but what may be more important is that you can get a gas smell in the garage and are losing a small amount of gas on a hot day in theory.
Modern cars have an evaporative emissions recovery system that requires a sealed gas tank, and so your cap may be leaking vapor. Some cars (Hondas are notorious for this) are very sensitive on the monitoring of the evaporative emissions system, and will light the SES light really quickly when you leave the cap off. IHope this helps...Glen |
