perfomance benefit of hood scoop

ok, saw this dude with a gsr bubble the other day and he put a hood scoop on it and it got me thinking of how much of a performance gain would he actually get from that.

now i know that if you can cool down the engine bay that your engine would respond better but with a hood scoop wouldn't it effect aero dynamics?

sorry if this is a stupid question, i honestly don't know if there is a big enough benefit for that

Re: perfomance benefit of hood scoop

most hood scoops wont do much... simply because they werent designed for the car they're on... but if you designe a proper hood scoop to put air where its needed and not interupt air flow over the car, i could see where there may be some benefit.... but youll never see me with one on my car (unless i swapped in some fully blown CBB)

Re: perfomance benefit of hood scoop

Fuck it, just get a cold air extention and save your aerodynmics. I don't see a hood scoop doing any good because of where the intake sits. At least on my car anyway...

Agree... it's just for show unless you can either buy/make a scoop to put the air right where you need it...
Hope this helps...

Re: perfomance benefit of hood scoop

the only hood scoops that actually do anything are on cars like Subaru WRX's which have a top mount intercooler or cars like the Mustangs that have the "shaker" hood scoops. There are obviously more cars, but those ones stick out

Re: perfomance benefit of hood scoop

are you talking about just the scoop or a hood with a scoop built in. either way, they don't do much (escpecially just the scoop) unless, like everybody said, redirect air to your air filter. but if you have a cai, then you don't need it any way. i'm with everyone else, just get a cai and call it a day. good luck.

Re: perfomance benefit of hood scoop

yeah that is what i thought, i already have a cai, i thought that there wouldn't be much of a benefit and then you have to worry about messing with your aerodynamics. Wonder what other ways are there to cool down that engine bay

Re: perfomance benefit of hood scoop

open the front bumper up to allow more air to flow through it. or insulate the CAI to keep the cooler air from being heated by the engine bay. (well, it will still heat up a little but not as fast.)

Re: perfomance benefit of hood scoop

you could try that CryO2 stuff. it's liquid carbon dioxide that apparently is really cold, and you inject it into you intake sort of like a dry (i think) nitrous system. (correct me if i'm wrong about the dry versus wet n2o stuff) it supposed to work but i've never seen any conclusive evidence that it does. jut a thought.

Re: perfomance benefit of hood scoop

i don think you inject it into your intake, thy have many systems ive seen, one is when you spray it onto your rad to cool the coolant. they also have a cooblock for your fuel rail... i dont know if any of this works or not, havent seen any results.

I too have heard of this set up, and I personally thought it was an awesome idea, especially if you just set it up with a mister system (like found on out door patios) rigged to a switch. Poor thing running hot? Just flip the switch and it works,

If I had a clue of how to set it up I would. My friend is turboing a DOHC ZC... so I'd think maybe he could benefit from doing this?
