How are you testing the alternator on the car? I don't know if they changed the wiring color code between 91-97 but the LG/R wire in the 97 goes from the I terminal of the alternator to the Charging Indicator light in the instrument panel.

Hmm..

I had the exact same problem on my 91 tbird. thought it was the alternator so I took it off and had it checked out at auto zone.. it was fine.. so I checked all the fuses in the wiring and they were fine. Turned out it was my ignition. You might have the same problem. There is a metal plate that connects to your ignition that is wired to a lot more shit then it should be and if it's not making contact it won't charge. they use little plastic clips to hold the plate to the ignition and after so much use they just break off .. I used wire ties to fix mine. It's a pain in the butt to get to it though. you have to take the pad under the steering wheel off and the cover on the steering wheel off and then you need the special little star bit with a hole in the center of it to take the anti-theft cover off. I can't remember what it's called. But I bet that's what the problem is on yours to. Good luck.

found the wiring at the instrument panel. the green/red wire connects to the alt. light and picks up on a gray/yellow wire on the other side. I know that when the switch is in the run position that there should be 12 volts on this circut, but I have no voltage. I need to know where this circut starts or any information I can get on this circut.

Re: 91 T-Bird altenator wiring

The wire from the other side of the alt light goes to the Run side of the ignition switch. Do what Dalinkwent said and check your switch connections and switch. In the Power Distribution Box there is a 60A fuse that feeds the ignition switch. You may want to go to your local library and ask for the Mitchell electrical manual for your year car to get the color codes and schematic. The wire from the other side of the light is R/LG on a 97 although it also shows GY/Y wires connected to the Run side of the switch. There are 13 terminals used in the ign. sw. connector of a 97. There are 5 Power leads (BK/O) from fuse, 1 Hot in Run and Start (R/LG) to Alt. light, 3 Hot in Run (GY/Y), 1 Hot in Run or ACC (BK/LG), 1 Hot in Start (R/LB), 1 Grd in Start (P/W) and 1 GND (BK). The connector has a rectangle shape with one corner cut off. The terminal on the long side closest to this corner has a BK/O wire that feeds, from the 60A fuse, through the switch to the R/LG wire of the terminal in the middle of this cut off corner (this may be your GY/Y wire) that goes the the Alt. light.
