I know that this doesn't answer your question, but I'm told that Autozone will scan your truck for free.
If you call around I'm sure that other places offer the same free service

Re: how to pull engine codes

It depends on what year your truck is. The late 80's trucks used a simple jumper and the code would flash the Check Engine light. The newer versions, I think with OBD I and definitly with OBD II will require a scanner to download and post the code(s) for you.

And yes, AutoZone will download the codes for you free.... check your local auto parts stores.

You can use a paper clip to jump the engine diagnostic plug by plugging it in at the top right corner of the plug. The plug is located under the dash by driver's right knee. This is until 1994 or 95 I believe. I have a 1993 and it is what I do. Plug the paper clip in, turn ignition on(do not start), and count the service engine light blinks. 1-1-2 (12) will blink three times and it means the computer is cycling. then the trouble codes if any will come up.if there aren't any,it will remain 1-1-2 (12) all clear.
